# How to Connect AvaTrade MT4 to Trader Journal

AvaTrade is regulated in multiple jurisdictions including the EU, Australia, Japan, and South Africa. It supports both MT4 and MT5. Here is the full connection guide.

## AvaTrade MT4 Server Names

- **AvaTrade-NET** (main server, most accounts)
- **AvaTrade-AU** (Australian entity accounts)
- **AvaTrade-EU** (EU accounts under AVA Trade EU Ltd)
- **Ava Financial Services-Real**

Your server appears in the bottom-right of the MT4 terminal.

## Setup Steps

### Download and Install EA

Trader Journal app → Settings → Expert Advisor → Download MT4 EA. Place `TraderJournal.ex4` in MT4 Data Folder → MQL4 → Experts. Refresh Navigator.

### Enable WebRequests

Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → Allow WebRequests → add `https://api.traderjournal.app`.

### Attach EA to Chart

Drag TraderJournal EA to a chart. Enter API key. Enable AutoTrading.

### Confirm

Your AvaTrade account appears in Trader Journal within 60 seconds.

## AvaTrade Account Specifics

**Fixed spreads on some instruments:** AvaTrade offers fixed spreads on many instruments. Trader Journal records the spread embedded in each trade's P&L. If you see consistent P&L differences between entry and a position that has not moved, this reflects the spread cost.

**No commission on standard accounts:** AvaTrade does not charge separate commissions on most accounts. P&L reflects spread cost only.

**Weekend trading restrictions:** AvaTrade does not allow positions to be held over weekends on some instruments. Any trades closed by AvaTrade at market close appear in Trader Journal as closed positions at the broker's specified close price.

**AvaOptions platform:** AvaTrade's options platform is separate and does not connect to Trader Journal. Only MT4 and MT5 accounts sync.

**AvaSocial and DupliTrade:** If you copy trades through AvaTrade's copy services, the copied positions appear in your MT4 account and sync to Trader Journal as regular trades.

## AvaTrade MT5

For MT5:
- **AvaTrade-MT5** server

Download and install `TraderJournal.ex5` in MQL5 → Experts. Same WebRequest and API key process.

## Troubleshooting

**EA connected but no trades appearing:** AvaTrade requires trades to have closed before they appear in history. Open positions sync in real time; historical closed trades sync on the next EA polling cycle (every 30 seconds).

**Spread seems higher than listed:** AvaTrade widens spreads during news and outside major session hours. Trader Journal captures the actual spread paid on each trade, which reflects real market conditions, not the typical spread advertised.

**Account in JPY or other currency:** Trader Journal handles multi-currency accounts. P&L is shown in your account currency. Conversion to USD is available in the app settings.
