# How to Connect FP Markets MT4 to Trader Journal

FP Markets is a well-regarded ECN broker under ASIC regulation. Setting up the Trader Journal connection takes under five minutes and enables automatic tracking of every trade you make.

## FP Markets MT4 Servers

FP Markets uses a small number of consistent servers:

- **FP Markets LLC-Live Server** (most common)
- **FP Markets LLC-Live Server 2**
- **FirstPrudential Markets Pty Ltd-Live Server** (older accounts under Australian entity)

Check your active server in the MT4 terminal bottom-right or under File → Login to Trade Account.

## Complete Setup Guide

### Download and Install the EA

1. Open Trader Journal app → Settings → Expert Advisor → Download MT4 EA
2. Copy `TraderJournal.ex4` to your MT4 Data Folder (File → Open Data Folder) → MQL4 → Experts
3. Right-click Expert Advisors in Navigator → Refresh

### Configure MT4 Settings

Two settings must be active:

**AutoTrading:** Click the AutoTrading button in the toolbar until it turns green.

**WebRequests:** Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → Allow WebRequests for listed URLs → add `https://api.traderjournal.app`.

### Attach EA to a Chart

Open any chart. Drag the TraderJournal EA from the Navigator panel onto the chart. Enter your API key from the Trader Journal app. Leave other settings at default and click OK.

### Confirm in App

Go to Accounts in Trader Journal. Your FP Markets account name appears within one minute if the connection is working.

## FP Markets Account Types

**Standard account:** Variable spreads from 1.0 pip on EURUSD, no commission. Trader Journal shows the full spread cost embedded in each trade's P&L.

**Raw ECN account:** Spreads from 0.0 pips with $3 per side commission. Trader Journal logs commission as a separate entry per trade. Your P&L after commission is always visible.

**Iress platform:** FP Markets also offers the Iress platform. Trader Journal supports MT4 and MT5 only. For automatic sync, use the MT4 or MT5 platform.

## FP Markets MT5 Support

FP Markets also supports MT5. The setup is the same but use the MT5 EA file (`TraderJournal.ex5`) and place it in MQL5 → Experts. FP Markets MT5 servers:

- **FP Markets LLC-MT5 Live**

## What the Journal Captures

With FP Markets MT4 connected, Trader Journal automatically logs:

- Every closed trade with full price detail
- Lot size and notional value
- Gross P&L in pips and account currency
- Commission charged (Raw ECN accounts)
- Overnight swap cost
- Entry and exit timestamps
- MT4 comment field (useful if you add trade reasons via your EA or order comments)

## Troubleshooting

**EA appears but does not connect:**
FP Markets uses standard MT4 security. Verify the WebRequest URL is exactly `https://api.traderjournal.app`. Some traders accidentally add a space or forward slash that breaks the match.

**Old trades not syncing:**
The EA syncs new trades from the moment it is attached. For historical trades, use MT4's Report function to export a CSV, then import that into Trader Journal under Settings → Import Trades.

**Account shows wrong currency:**
FP Markets offers USD and AUD-denominated accounts. Trader Journal automatically detects the account currency from the MT4 account information. If the currency is wrong, check your FP Markets account settings in the Client Portal.

## Next Step: Add Your First Manual Note

Once connected, open Trader Journal and add a one-line note to your next FP Markets trade explaining why you entered. Over 20 to 30 trades, patterns in your reasoning — both good and bad — become clear. That clarity is the direct reason traders who journal improve faster than those who do not.
