# How to Connect OANDA MT4 to Trader Journal

OANDA is primarily known for its proprietary fxTrade platform, but it also offers MetaTrader 4 access. This guide covers connecting OANDA MT4 to Trader Journal.

## OANDA MT4 Access

OANDA offers MT4 through its broker services in select regions. The MT4 platform from OANDA uses the v20 trading system. Common server names:

- **OANDA - fxTrade** (standard live)
- **OANDA - fxTrade Practice** (demo)

Some regions access OANDA MT4 through partner arrangements. Your exact server name appears when you log into MT4 with your OANDA credentials.

## Important Note on OANDA Platform Availability

OANDA has moved toward its own web-based and mobile platforms. MT4 availability varies by country. Verify that your OANDA account type includes MT4 access before proceeding. If you see MT4 as an option in your OANDA account portal, this guide applies.

## Setup Steps

### Install the EA

Trader Journal app → Settings → Expert Advisor → Download MT4 EA. Copy `TraderJournal.ex4` to MT4 Data Folder → MQL4 → Experts. Refresh Navigator.

### Enable WebRequests

Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → Allow WebRequests → add `https://api.traderjournal.app`.

### Attach EA to Chart

Drag TraderJournal EA onto any chart. Enter API key. Enable AutoTrading.

### Confirm Connection

Account appears in Trader Journal within 60 seconds.

## OANDA-Specific Notes

**Fractional lot sizes:** OANDA allows trading in any unit size (not just standard lots). MT4 reports this as lot size. Trader Journal records the MT4-reported lot size directly.

**No commission on standard accounts:** OANDA typically charges through the spread rather than commission.

**Spread varies significantly:** OANDA spreads widen substantially during off-hours and news. Trader Journal's cost analysis is particularly useful for OANDA traders to see how much of their gross P&L is consumed by spread.

**fxTrade platform comparison:** If you also trade on OANDA fxTrade (the web platform), those trades do not automatically sync to Trader Journal. Only MT4 trades sync via the EA.

## For OANDA Traders Without MT4

If your OANDA account does not include MT4, you can still use Trader Journal with manual trade entry. Go to Trades → Add Trade in the app and enter each trade manually. You can also import trade history via CSV from the OANDA transaction history export.

For full automatic sync, consider whether switching to an OANDA MT4 account type makes sense for your trading workflow.

## Summary

OANDA MT4 connects to Trader Journal using the same EA process as other brokers. The key is verifying MT4 access is enabled on your OANDA account before starting. Once connected, all trades on the MT4 platform sync automatically.
