# How to Connect Pepperstone MT4 to Trader Journal

Pepperstone is a top-tier ECN broker known for tight spreads and fast execution. Connecting it to Trader Journal gives you an automatic record of every trade, with commission and swap data included.

## Pepperstone MT4 Server Names

Pepperstone operates under multiple entities depending on where you registered:

**Pepperstone Group Limited (Australia/Bahamas):**
- Pepperstone Group Limited-Live01
- Pepperstone Group Limited-Live02

**Pepperstone Limited (UK/FCA regulated):**
- Pepperstone Limited-Live01
- Pepperstone Limited-Live02

**Pepperstone Markets Limited (Bahamas):**
- Pepperstone Markets Limited-Live01

Check your current server in the bottom-right corner of the MT4 terminal.

## Setup Process

### Step 1: Get the EA

In Trader Journal app, navigate to Settings → Expert Advisor → Download MT4 EA. Save `TraderJournal.ex4` to your computer.

### Step 2: Install EA

Open MT4 → File → Open Data Folder → MQL4 → Experts. Copy the `.ex4` file here. In MT4 Navigator panel, right-click Expert Advisors and select Refresh.

### Step 3: Allow WebRequests

Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → check "Allow WebRequests for listed URLs" → add `https://api.traderjournal.app`.

### Step 4: Attach to Chart

Drag TraderJournal EA to any open chart. Enter your Trader Journal API key. Click OK. Enable the green AutoTrading button in the toolbar.

### Step 5: Verify

Within 60 seconds, your Pepperstone account appears in the Trader Journal app under Accounts.

## Pepperstone-Specific Considerations

**Razor vs Standard accounts:** Pepperstone Razor accounts have very tight spreads (near 0 on majors) with a commission charge. Trader Journal captures commission as a separate cost per trade, so your true P&L after commission is always accurate in the journal.

**Raw ECN data:** Because Pepperstone provides raw spread data, Trader Journal's cost analysis is particularly useful. You can see your average spread cost per trade and identify whether you are entering at optimal times.

**cTrader support:** Pepperstone is known for cTrader. If you use cTrader instead of MT4, Trader Journal does not yet support it directly. Stick to the MT4 platform for automatic sync.

**Pepperstone Pro accounts:** Pro accounts have additional requirements and different margin rules but work identically for journaling purposes.

## Razor Account Commission Tracking

Pepperstone Razor charges commission per side. For EURUSD, the typical commission is $3.50 per lot per side ($7.00 round turn). Trader Journal records:

- The trade P&L from price movement
- Commission charged on entry
- Commission charged on exit
- Swap for overnight positions

Your net P&L in Trader Journal includes all three components, giving you a true picture of every trade's cost.

## Multiple Accounts

If you have both a Pepperstone demo and live account, attach the EA in separate MT4 windows with each account logged in. Trader Journal tracks each account independently with its own statistics.

## Troubleshooting

**EA loads but shows no face icon:**
Pepperstone uses strict firewall settings on some account types. Confirm the WebRequest URL is added exactly as `https://api.traderjournal.app` with no trailing slash or spaces.

**Commission showing as positive value:**
Some brokers encode commission as a positive number in the trade record. Trader Journal normalises this to negative (a cost) regardless of how the broker reports it. If you see commissions as positive in the raw MT4 history but negative in Trader Journal, that is correct behaviour.

**Partial fills not tracked:**
If you use limit orders and get partial fills, MT4 records each partial fill as a separate trade. Trader Journal captures each fill individually. You can use the Tag system to group related fills for a single position analysis.

## Getting Value From Your Pepperstone Data

Pepperstone traders typically focus on scalping and short-term strategies. In Trader Journal, the most useful analyses for Pepperstone users are:

- **Average holding time** per trade (scalpers typically under 15 minutes)
- **Hourly performance breakdown** to find your best execution windows
- **Cost as % of P&L** — on small scalps, commission and spread are a large percentage of gross profit

Start tracking these metrics from your first connected trade.
