# MT4 Account Number, Server, and Login Explained

When you add an MT4 account to Trader Journal, the setup form asks for your account number (login), server name, and a few other details. Here is where to find each piece of information and what it represents.

---

## Account Number (Login)

Your MT4 account number is the numeric ID assigned by your broker when you opened the account. It is the number you use to log into the MT4 terminal.

Where to find it:
- The account opening email from your broker
- The top-left of the MT4 terminal when logged in (shown in the Navigator panel)
- Your broker's client portal or dashboard

This is not your email address or any other login credential. It is purely a number, typically 5-8 digits.

---

## Server Name

The server name is the connection endpoint that your MT4 terminal connects to. Your broker operates one or more servers, and each has a specific name.

Where to find it:
- The MT4 login dialog (File > Login to Trade Account) - the Server field shows your current server
- The bottom-right of the MT4 terminal shows the connection status including server name
- Your broker's documentation or website

Server names typically look like: "ICMarkets-Live01" or "XM.COM-Real" or "Pepperstone-MT4-Live"

If you have a demo account, the server name usually includes "Demo" somewhere in it.

---

## Why the Server Name Matters for Journaling

The server name in Trader Journal is primarily for your reference - it helps you identify which account is which when you have multiple accounts. It is not used by the app to verify your connection.

The actual connection to your MT4 account happens via the EA running inside your terminal, not via the journal server. The journal server never connects to your broker. Only your EA does.

---

## Broker Name

The broker name in the Trader Journal setup is a label you enter for your own reference. There is no validation or lookup - it is whatever you type. Use your broker's common name: "IC Markets," "Pepperstone," "XM," etc.

---

## Account Currency

Your account base currency is the currency in which your P&L is denominated. This is set when you open the account with your broker and cannot be changed afterward.

Common account currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY.

This matters for the journal because P&L calculations on your trades are displayed in your account currency. If you have a EUR account and trade GBPUSD, the pip value and P&L are converted to EUR.

---

## Initial Balance

This is the balance you had when you started using Trader Journal, not necessarily your all-time deposit.

It is used for drawdown percentage calculations. If you enter 10,000 as your initial balance and your account drops to 9,000, the journal can show that as a 10% drawdown.

If you start Trader Journal mid-account-life, enter your current balance at the time you set up the connection. Future performance tracking will be accurate from that point.

## Finding All This Information in MT4

The fastest way to get everything you need:

1. Open MT4
2. Go to File > Login to Trade Account
3. The dialog shows your account number (Login field), the server name (Server dropdown), and your password field

Your broker name and account currency you will know from your account documents. Your initial balance is visible in the Account tab at the top of the MT4 terminal.
