# Optimal Trade Entry (OTE): How to Journal It

Optimal Trade Entry (OTE) is an ICT concept where you enter a trade at the 61.8%–79% Fibonacci retracement of a swing move. The idea is that institutional orders partially fill during the retracement into this zone before continuing in the original direction.

## The OTE Zone

To identify OTE:
1. Identify a clear swing low and swing high (or high to low for bearish)
2. Draw a Fibonacci retracement on that swing
3. The **OTE zone** is between **61.8% and 79%** of the retracement
4. The 62% and 79% levels are your zone boundaries

In a bullish scenario: price makes a swing high, pulls back to 61.8–79%, then continues up. Entry is within that pullback zone.

## OTE Entry Checklist

Before entering on an OTE, check:
- [ ] Clear swing identified with displacement (not a choppy range)
- [ ] Price is retracing, not reversing (ChoCH would invalidate)
- [ ] OTE zone aligns with an order block or FVG
- [ ] Kill zone timing (London or NY session)
- [ ] HTF bias agrees with direction

## What to Log in Your Journal

For every OTE trade, record in Notes or Pre-trade plan:

```
OTE swing: [price low] to [price high]
OTE zone: [61.8% price] to [79% price]
Entry price: [actual entry]
Within OTE zone: Yes / No
OB at OTE: Yes / No
FVG at OTE: Yes / No
Session: London / NY
Kill zone: Yes / No
Result: Win / Loss / BE
```

Tag the trade `ote` in Trader Journal.

## Analyzing Your OTE Data

After 30–50 OTE trades, look for:

- **Accuracy rate** — how often does price actually reach your OTE zone after you identify it?
- **Win rate within zone vs near zone** — does entering exactly at 61.8%–79% matter?
- **Confluence impact** — do OTE + OB trades outperform OTE-only trades?
- **Session breakdown** — does OTE work better in London or New York for your pairs?

## Common Mistakes

**Forcing OTE on every retracement:** OTE is most reliable after a clear displacement move with a BOS. Do not apply it to small, choppy swings.

**Missing the zone entry:** If price runs through the OTE zone fast without giving an entry, skip the trade. Do not chase.

**Ignoring invalidation:** If price closes convincingly below (for longs) the 79% level, the swing structure is broken. Exit or do not enter.

## Summary

OTE gives precision entries with defined risk. Journaling whether you entered inside or outside the zone — and correlating that with outcomes — is how you quantify whether OTE accuracy actually matters in your trading.
