# Premium and Discount Zones in SMC Trading

In Smart Money Concepts, price is always considered either in a **premium** (expensive) or **discount** (cheap) zone relative to a defined range. The core rule: buy in discount, sell in premium.

## Defining the Range

Take any swing (low to high or high to low) and draw a 50% midpoint:

- **Above 50% = Premium** — price is expensive relative to this range
- **Below 50% = Discount** — price is cheap relative to this range
- **At 50% = Equilibrium** — neutral, often a reaction zone

For **buy setups:** look for entries in the discount zone (below 50%).
For **sell setups:** look for entries in the premium zone (above 50%).

## Multiple Timeframe Application

This concept works at every timeframe. You check:
1. **Daily range** — where is price in the daily swing? Premium or discount?
2. **4H range** — where is price in the 4H range?
3. **Entry TF range** — are you entering in discount on the M15?

All three aligning (e.g., discount on D, 4H, and M15 for a buy) is the highest-quality setup.

## What to Journal

For every trade, record in Notes:

- **HTF position:** Premium / Discount / Equilibrium on D and H4
- **Entry TF position:** Premium / Discount on M15 or M5
- **Alignment:** All discount / Mixed / All premium
- **Result:** Win / Loss / BE

Tag trades `premium-sell` or `discount-buy` in Trader Journal.

## What the Data Reveals

After tracking 50+ trades with premium/discount labels:

- **Alignment trades** (all TFs in same zone) vs **misaligned trades** — does alignment improve your win rate?
- **Equilibrium trades** — how do they perform compared to clear premium/discount entries?

Most traders who track this find that entering in the wrong zone (buying premium or selling discount) is one of their most common losing patterns. The journal makes this visible.

## Combining With Order Blocks

The most powerful combination: an order block sitting in the discount zone (for longs). This gives both the institutional footprint (OB) and the value confirmation (discount). Journal these separately with a `discount-OB` tag to measure the combined edge.

## Summary

Premium and discount is a filter, not an entry trigger. It improves trade selection when used consistently. Your journal is the only way to know whether applying this filter actually helps your specific strategy on your specific pairs.
